Are Braces Right for You?

Adult BracesIf you have been wanting a straighter smile, then braces could be right for you. Braces are a type of orthodontic treatment for straightening teeth, closing gaps between teeth, and correcting alignment or bite problems. Braces can be worn be both teens and adults. At DiMariano Family Dentistry and Orthodontics, Dr. Shaina DiMariano is your Folsom orthodontist for braces.

Types of Braces

There are several different types of braces available. Your Folsom orthodontist can help you select the right type for you. The four main types of braces available include:

  • Metal braces
  • Clear braces
  • Lingual braces
  • Aligner trays

Metal, clear, and lingual braces each rely on brackets and wires to move the teeth. For metal and clear braces, the brackets are placed on the front of the teeth. A major difference between the two options is that the brackets used for clear braces blend in with the teeth for a discreet look. Lingual braces are also discreet as the brackets are placed on the back of the teeth. All three types of braces are effective options for straightening crooked teeth, closing gaps between teeth, and correcting alignment or bite problems, such as overbites and underbites.

Aligner trays represent an alternative method for straightening teeth and closing small gaps. There are no brackets and wires. The teeth are straightened using aligner trays that fit over the top and bottom rows of teeth. The trays are custom made for each patient. New sets of trays are provided every few weeks. The aligner trays offer several advantages, including being soft, discreet, and removable. One disadvantage is that while aligner trays effectively straighten teeth, they cannot necessarily be used to correct bite or alignment problems.

A dentist or an orthodontist can help you decide if braces are right for you, as well as which type is best for the results you wish to achieve.
